Introduction

If you work in buying or product development, you probably see the term plastic free wipes everywhere now. Retailers ask for them, marketing teams love the claim, and EU regulations push everyone in the same direction. But when you sit down with your supplier and your packaging engineer, one simple question comes up:

“What exactly do plastic free wipes mean in real life?”

In this article, we speak as a private label wet wipes manufacturer with over 16 years of production experience. We focus on what plastic free wipes really cover, which materials you can use, where the limits sit, and how you can turn a buzzword into a stable, compliant product line.

We also want to clarify an important point from the start:

When we say plastic free wipes in this article, we talk about the wipe material (the nonwoven substrate). The outer wet wipe packaging still needs plastic film or a plastic structure to hold liquid safely, especially for long-distance transport. A fully plastic free pouch for standard wet wipes is not realistic today if you want leak-proof, shelf-stable products.

So plastic free here means plastic free wipe substrate, not 100% plastic free product including the flow pack.

Why More Brands Ask for Plastic Free Wipes Now ?

Over the last few years, we have seen a sharp increase in European buyers asking for plastic free wipes. That trend comes from three main drivers.

First, regulation. The EU Single-Use Plastics Directive (SUPD) covers wet wipes that contain plastic and sets rules for labeling and producer responsibility. Brands that still use polyester or polypropylene based wipes now carry a clear “contains plastic” message, which does not match a sustainability-forward image. At the same time, EU guidance clarifies that regenerated cellulose fibers such as viscose and lyocell do not count as plastic under this directive, if they do not contain extra synthetic polymers.

Second, consumer awareness. Customers now understand that many traditional baby wipes and cleaning wipes include plastic fibers that stay in the environment for a long time. They search for plastic free wipes, plastic free baby wipes, and plant-based wipes, and they read ingredient lists. In many categories, the plastic free label has become a basic expectation rather than a premium add-on.

Third, retail and channel pressure. Large retailers add sustainability rules into their supplier manuals. They ask for plastic free wet wipes, or at least a clear roadmap toward more cellulose-based wipes. For a brand owner, the choice is simple: adapt the substrate now, or lose shelf space later.

What Does “Plastic” Mean in Wet Wipes?

To understand plastic free wipes, we first need to look at what counts as “plastic” in wet wipes.

Most conventional wet wipes use plastic fibers in the nonwoven base:

  • Polyester (PET)
  • Polypropylene (PP)
  • Blends of PET/PP with a small amount of pulp or cotton

These fibers come from petrochemical sources and behave like other plastics in the environment. They resist biodegradation and can release microplastics over time. That is why most “normal” baby wipes and household wipes fall into the category of wet wipes containing plastic

Under EU SUP guidance, the definition of plastic focuses on polymeric materials that form the main structure of a product. Bioplastics such as PLA and PHA still fall under “plastic” in this directive, even though they come from renewable sources and can biodegrade under certain conditions. In contrast, regenerated cellulose fibers like viscose and lyocell do not count as plastic because the EU does not treat them as chemically modified polymers in this context.

So in practical terms:

A wipe that uses PET or PP fibers still counts as plastic.

A wipe that uses pure viscose or lyocell, or combines these with wood pulp, can meet “plastic free” expectations under current EU guidance, as long as you do not blend in synthetic fibers or bioplastics.

So What Do Plastic Free Wipes Really Mean?

When a brand or retailer talks about plastic free wipes, they usually expect three things:

  1. The nonwoven substrate does not contain synthetic plastic fibers such as PET, PP, or bioplastics that still count as plastic in the EU SUPD.
  2. The wipe uses plant-based, cellulose-based fibers such as viscose, lyocell, wood pulp, cotton, or bamboo viscose.
  3. Marketing claims match regulation, so you avoid “contains plastic” labels and reduce the risk of greenwashing.

Plastic free wipes do not automatically mean:

  • Flushable wipes
  • Compostable wipes (especially not for home compost)
  • Zero-impact wipes

You still need to manage disposal recommendations, wastewater impact, and end-of-life claims carefully. But from a buyer’s point of view, plastic free wipes at least remove synthetic plastic fibers from the wipe itself.

Plastic Free vs Biodegradable vs Compostable vs Flushable

Many teams mix these words in the same meeting. That creates confusion and risk. Let’s separate them.

TermFocusSimple Explanation
Plastic Free WipesFiber ContentMade without plastic fibers. Usually made from plant-based materials like wood pulp.
Biodegradable WipesBreaks Down Over TimeMade from materials that microbes can break down in nature.
Compostable WipesBreaks Down in a Compost FacilityMust break down under specific industrial conditions (heat, moisture, time).
Flushable WipesSafe for ToiletsDesigned to break apart quickly in water to avoid clogging pipes. Must pass specific standards.

When you design a new line of plastic free wet wipes, you should decide what you really need:

  • Only plastic free for regulatory and branding reasons?

  • Plastic free + biodegradable?

  • Plastic free + compostable?

  • Or a specialized flushable wipe for toilet use?

Each combination leads to different material choices, testing programs, and costs.

The Key Materials Behind Plastic Free Wipes

From a manufacturing point of view, plastic free wipes start with the right nonwoven substrate. Most successful projects use cellulose-based fibers and plant-based wipes materials.

Viscose and Lyocell: Regenerated Cellulose Workhorses

Viscose and lyocell come from wood pulp or other plant sources. Producers dissolve cellulose and then regenerate it into continuous fibers. These fibers belong to the cellulosic family, not to synthetic plastics. The EU now clearly states that viscose and lyocell do not count as plastic under the SUP guidelines when producers do not modify them in a way that changes their nature.

For wet wipes, viscose and lyocell offer several advantages:

  • a soft and cloth-like touch, high absorbency;
  • and good strength when we design the basis weight ;
  • and web structure correctly. They fit baby wipes, facial wipes;
  • and cosmetic wipes very well.

Many plastic free wet wipes use:

  • 100% viscose spunlace

  • 100% lyocell spunlace

  • Blends of viscose and lyocell with wood pulp

These options give you a good balance of softness, performance, and price.

Wood Pulp: Engine for Pulp-Based and Hybrid Wipes

Wood pulp plays a big role in plastic free household wipes and cost-sensitive ranges. You often see it in composite structures such as:

  • Pulp / viscose spunlace
  • Pulp-rich CAC or CPC designs, where layers of carded fibers and airlaid pulp combine into one nonwoven web.

Pulp adds:

  • High absorbency
  • Stiffness and “paper-like” cleaning power
  • A natural look that many eco-brands enjoy

For baby wipes or sensitive skin, you might not want a very pulp-heavy structure. For surface cleaning, floor wipes, or HoReCa wipes, pulp works extremely well.

Cotton and Bamboo: Familiar Plant-Based Stories

Cotton wipes and bamboo wipes speak very clearly to consumers. Cotton feels familiar, and bamboo sounds modern and eco-forward.

Cotton brings:

  • Strong “natural” perception
  • Very soft and gentle touch
  • Good compatibility with baby and facial formulas

Bamboo, usually in the form of bamboo viscose, brings:

  • Fast-growing, renewable raw material
  • Smooth fibers and strong wipes
  • Strong marketing story for plastic free baby wipes and plant-based wipes

Cotton and bamboo viscose often cost more than standard viscose or pulp blends, so we usually position them in premium lines.

How Do Plastic Free Wipes Perform in Real Life?

Many buyers worry that plastic free wipes will feel weaker, rougher, or less stable than their current PET or PP based wipes. With the right design, that does not need to happen. From our production experience, we look at five main performance areas.

1. Handfeel and softness

Direct-Spun for wet wipes

Cellulose-based wipes usually feel very pleasant on the skin. Viscose, lyocell, and bamboo viscose deliver a smooth, cloth-like handfeel that suits baby and facial use. Wood pulp adds a slightly dryer, paper-like touch, which can work well for cleaning wipes.

2. Strength and linting

Plastic free wipes can reach strong wet tensile strength when we choose the right basis weight, fiber blend, and bonding method. Lyocell-based spunlace in particular offers good strength and low lint, even without synthetic fibers.

3. Lotion compatibility

Most lotion systems for baby wipes, personal care wipes, and household wipes work well with plastic free wipe substrates. We focus on:

  • Even lotion distribution

  • Good rewet value (how much liquid the wipe releases on skin)

  • Stability across shelf life

4. Environmental profile

Plastic free wipes use materials that come from natural sources and can biodegrade under proper conditions. That does not mean zero impact, but it does avoid the microplastic issue that comes with PET/PP based wipes.

5. Cost and supply

Plastic free wipes usually cost more than simple PET/PP wipes because plant-based fibers and specialty nonwovens cost more. However, when you consider regulatory risk, brand positioning, and retailer demands, many buyers now treat this cost as part of the normal product spec.

The Honest Part: Why Packaging Cannot Be 100% Plastic Free

Now we come back to the point that matters a lot for you as a buyer:

We can make plastic free wipes at the level of the nonwoven substrate, but we cannot remove plastic from the wet wipe packaging in most real projects. Wet wipe pouches must:

  • Hold a high-water lotion system
  • Stay sealed during shipping and shelf life
  • Survive long-distance transport, often across continents
  • Resist tears and pinholes when customers open and close the pack

When you fill a pack with wet wipes and stack cartons in a container, the film faces pressure, movement, and changes in temperature. A paper-only or fully compostable film often fails under these conditions. The risk of leakage, mold, or dry-out becomes very high. So in current real-world practice:

  • The wipe material can be plastic free.
  • The outer pouch still relies on a plastic film structure for barrier and sealing.

You can reduce plastic footprint with:

  • Thinner films
  • Mono-material films that recycle more easily
  • Films with post-consumer recycled (PCR) content
  • Larger refill packs that reduce film use per wipe

From a compliance and marketing perspective, we recommend a clear message:

  • You can claim “plastic free wipes” when the substrate meets that condition.
  • You should not claim “100% plastic free product” if the packaging still uses plastic film.
  • You can mention “plastic free wipe material with reduced-plastic or recyclable packaging” as a more honest position.

This approach keeps your brand credible and keeps your packaging team realistic.

How to Choose the Right Plastic Free Wipes for Your Brand

When we support a new project, we usually walk buyers and product managers through four steps.

Step 1: Define the Application

Start with the use case, not the marketing claim:

  • Plastic free baby wipes for newborns or sensitive skin

  • Facial wipes or cosmetic remover wipes

  • Intimate care wipes

  • Household or kitchen wipes

  • HoReCa or travel wipes for hotels and airlines

Each application sets different expectations for softness, thickness, strength, and price.

Step 2: Match Application to Substrate

Next, we match the application to a practical plastic free wipe substrate:

  • Baby wipes and facial wipes

    • 100% viscose

    • Viscose + lyocell blends

    • Bamboo viscose based wipes

  • Household and surface wipes

    • Pulp-rich CAC/CPC structures

    • Viscose + wood pulp mixes for stronger cleaning

  • Intimate or sensitive wipes

    • Lyocell-based wipes

    • Cotton or bamboo-rich substrates for extra comfort

Here, we also set basis weight, emboss pattern, and roll width to fit your converting line.

Step 3: Decide on Claims and Tests

You decide which claims you really need:

  • Plastic free wipes
  • Biodegradable or compostable wipes
  • Vegan or cruelty free
  • Dermatologically tested
  • Fragrance free, alcohol free, or allergen free

Each claim can require specific tests: biodegradability tests, compostability standards, dermatology patch tests, and others. We help you build a test plan that matches your budget and timeline.

Step 4: Align Packaging and Labeling

Finally, you align:

  • Packaging film choice (thickness, recyclability, PCR content)

  • Labeling for EU SUPD and local regulations

  • Disposal advice (do not flush / can go to industrial compost where available, etc.)

At this point, your product team and marketing team share the same picture. You understand what plastic free wipes mean for your brand on paper and on shelf.

What to Ask Your Plastic Free Wipes Manufacturer ?

If you already speak with suppliers about plastic free wet wipes, you can use this checklist.

Ask your manufacturer:

  1. What is the exact fiber composition of the wipe substrate?
Ask for percentage breakdown and confirmation that the wipe contains 0% PET / 0% PP / 0% bioplastic fibers.

  2. Which fibers do you use?
For example: viscose, lyocell, wood pulp, cotton, bamboo viscose. Ask how each option affects softness, price, and performance.

  3. Which certificates or test reports can you share?
For example: test reports on biodegradability, compostability, dermatology tests, and any “plastic free wipes” related documentation.

  4. What MOQ and lead time can you offer for plastic free wipes?
Plant-based substrates often involve different supply chains and MOQs. You should confirm how flexible your supplier can be for launches and promotions.

  5. How do you support EU-compliant labeling?
Ask how they handle SUPD-related labeling, disposal icons, and claim wording. A good EU-compliant plastic free wipes supplier already tracks these changes.

The answers to these questions tell you whether you work with a true plastic free wipes manufacturer or just a factory that tries to rebrand standard products.

How Unicare Wipes Supports Your Plastic Free Project

At Unicare Wipes, we position ourselves as a private label wet wipes manufacturer that grows together with our clients. When buyers ask us for plastic free wipes, we follow a clear process.

First, we listen. We ask about:

  • Target market (for example, EU, UK, Middle East)

  • Channel (drugstore, supermarket, online, professional)

  • Application (baby, personal care, household, HoReCa)

  • Sustainability priorities (plastic free only, or also biodegradable / compostable)

Second, we propose practical plastic free wipes options. Depending on your project, we can work with:

  • 100% viscose plastic free wipes

  • Viscose + wood pulp wipes for better cleaning strength

  • Lyocell-based wipes for premium personal care

  • Bamboo viscose wipes for strong plant-based storytelling

We discuss target cost, weight, and performance, and we suggest trial runs.

Third, we help you test. We can guide you on:

  • Internal performance tests

  • Third-party biodegradability or compostability tests

  • Dermatology testing for baby and facial ranges

Fourth, we help you align packaging reality with marketing ambition. We explain:

  • Where we can remove plastic (from the wipe substrate)

  • Where we still need plastic (in the pouch film)

  • How we can reduce plastic (thinner films, mono-material, PCR content)

In short, we help you build plastic free wipes that can ship in full containers, sit on shelves, and survive real customer use.

Turning Search Traffic Into Real Projects

When people search for “what do plastic free wipes mean”, they often sit in one of these roles:

  • A buyer who needs to answer a retailer’s questionnaire

  • A brand manager who wants to refresh a baby or cosmetic line

  • A regulatory or sustainability manager who needs to align claims with the SUPD

  • A founder of a new eco-brand who wants plant-based wipes from day one

If you recognize yourself in one of these roles, you already know that generic answers do not help. You need a partner who understands the fiber-level details, the nonwoven production reality, and the packaging limitations.

That is where we fit in. We do not just ship cartons. We guide you through every step of your plastic free wet wipes project, from substrate choice to pack design.

Conclusion: Plastic Free Wipes as a Realistic, Long-Term Strategy

Plastic free wipes are more than a marketing trend. For many brands, they now form the baseline for sustainable wet wipes solutions.

To summarize:

  • Plastic free wipes focus on the nonwoven substrate. We remove synthetic plastic fibers and switch to cellulose-based fibers such as viscose, lyocell, wood pulp, cotton, and bamboo viscose.

  • These materials fit current EU SUPD guidance, which treats viscose and lyocell as non-plastic when producers do not modify them in a way that changes their nature.

  • Plastic free wipes do not automatically mean biodegradable, compostable, or flushable. You still need clear claims and proper testing.

  • The wipe can be plastic free, but the outer packaging still needs plastic to keep the lotion and product safe, especially during long-distance transport. We can reduce and optimize this plastic, but we cannot remove it completely today for standard wet wipes.

  • A smart brand treats plastic free wipes as part of a long-term strategy: better materials, honest labels, and realistic packaging choices.

If you plan a new line of private label plastic free wipes or want to convert an existing range, you can reach out to our team. Share your target market, your channel, and your sustainability goals. We will help you translate “plastic free wipes” from a search keyword into a real product that your customers can hold in their hands.
